5 Random Things to do for Fun
It 5 in the afternoon and you’re done with classes. You finished all your work and studying is the furthest thing from your mind. Being in a new town and school you’re probably unsure of what you could possibly do to have a good time. Well don’t fret. We have a list for you right here of random/spontaneous yet fun things to do (especially when you’re bored.)
1. Form a Band
Since the beginning of time music has been one of those things that complete strangers could talk about without the conversation getting weird or “awkward”. Once you find some friends that share your taste in music you should form a band. Whether its an all girl band singing songs from the 90’s or a Ska band playing the most eccentric instruments known to man, just get out there and sing. This is number one on the list because it’s great for forming friendships and keeping them. I formed a band 6 man band the first week of of my freshman year and I’m still really great friends with all 6 six members of the band. In fact all 3 of the content writers for the blog are were in that band.
2. Go Out to Eat
If there’s one thing you can always count on at Penn State, (aside from the drinking and footballs and parties) is that there will always be good food. Not only is the food great but there’s more variety in State College than there is in New York City when it comes to your food choices. This is a fact not an exaggeration. Just trust us on this one. So whenever you and your friends are bored go out and find a new place to eat. It’s not just good for food fanatics but it always a great time when you’re out eating with friends. If you don’t have any friends or just can’t find anyone to go eat with you, this not a step you’ll want to follow. You’ll end up bored and lonely. Then you will realize that you’ve just been shoveling food even though you’re full, but it’s okay because you’re not bored and lonely anymore. This is something that I’ve heard through the grapevine. I have not experienced this firsthand.
3. Go to Late Night at the Hub
To those who have seen Late night from afar but never actually experienced it, this might seem lame. No, there isn’t any alcohol (but you’re 18-19 so you can’t drink anyway). No, it’s not better than going to a party/club (but you obviously can’t get into one so do like my grandma says and “Get in where you fit in”) This means that late night at the Hub will at one point or another be your only option if you can’t find friends or something better to do on a weeknight. Hub late night has movies every weekend in the theatre in the hub. These are usually blockbusters that people want to see and they’re always free to Penn State students. Late night also has hilarious comedians that perform for free. Acts include big names like Gabriel Iglesias and Anthony Jeselnik. I’d mention more about what Late Night offers but the movies and comedians are the only things my friends and I ever went to.
Some people do this for fun. They’re usually juice heads from New Jersey (its okay for me to say this because I’m from New Jersey) or in some rare cases that one guy that just really likes to work out. I personally hate working out but I do it because I don’t want to get fat and it’s sometimes very therapeutic. This can be done with or without friends. If you’re weight lifting you’ll probably want to have a buddy, but this is always optional. Working out is the one thing on the list that’s actually productive. If you ever find yourself with nothing to do, or if you have stuff to do but don’t feel like doing it, go work out. It’s good for you and it’s a great way to take your mind of that 10 page paper you’ll have to write on the hardness of water. (You’ll understand that reference if you ever have to take Chem 111)
5. Visit the Arboretum
The arboretum is literally a garden of trees. It’s acres upon acres of field and trees that stretch further than you could ever hope to walk. It’s very nice to walk through in the fall while the trees are still changing colors. This is another one of those places that will take your mind off things. This is hands down, one of the THEE best places to go to when you need to think. Bear in mind that at night the arboretum becomes creepier than the creepiest graveyard. Its pitch black because there’s no light for miles. It’s 15 degrees colder than anywhere else in state college and its deathly silent. This trio of cold, dark, and quiet make for some very interesting nights if fear is the sort of thing you find fun.
